Records of the State Prison of Southern Michigan, 1874-1962.

Series 3 and 4 of Record Group 64-50 consist of a records relating to the inmate population of the Michigan State Prison. The first series of records are of the population (1874-1929, 1955-1962). This consists of a daily register of the number of prisoners gained or lost for various reasons. The second series of records are statistical reports (1927-1934). These are printed monthly statistical reports that include movement; gains and losses in population; statistical breakdown by race; location in main prison, annex, facilities at Chelsea and Onondaga and the farms; nativity; foreign born; religious faith; education; marital status; age; war service; trade and occupation; and criminal history.

The Michigan State Prison (also known as Jackson Prison) was established by law in Jackson, Michigan in 1838. The prison changed its name to the State Prison of Southern Michigan in 1935. The prison closed on January 4, 2002. The prison was under the jurisdiction of the Michigan Department of Corrections, which was established in 1937.
